Al6111 and 5083 for Car Body

In fact, lightweighting is not just about reducing weight, but about balancing vehicle performance, safety, cost and weight. The automotive aluminum sheets include AA6111, 6016, 6014, 6061, 6022, 6181, 5052, 5182, 5754, 5083 and other aluminum alloys. The thickness specification of aluminum plates for cars is generally about 0.7~2.0mm.

1. Good formability and flanging ductility

Some sheet metal parts, such as the synthesis of the inner and outer panels of the engine cover, use flanging technology. Therefore, the aluminum alloy plate is required to have high cracking resistance and good flanging ductility when stamping and flanging.

2. Strong surface smoothness

ABS aluminum sheets must have good flanging ductility and uniform surface tone after forming, that is, there will be no ropingline on the surface of the formed sheet metal part. It is caused by uneven grains or uneven inclusions.

3. Good welding performance

Good weldability can meet the requirements for direct welding of automobile components after forming. The aluminum plate should have anti-aging stability to ensure that the aluminum plate does not age during the period from leaving the factory to stamping, and to prevent the yield point of the material from rising during stamping.

4. Excellent baking hardening properties

Automobile lightweighting also requires the aluminum sheet to have high bake hardening properties, that is, the yield strength of the aluminium sheet increases significantly after stamping deformation and painting and baking, thereby ensuring that the finished sheet metal parts have high dent resistance and compression resistance.

The paint baking process of aluminum alloy plates should be compatible with the current baking process of steel plate stamping parts, because the paint baking process of automobile companies is now based on steel plates.

5. Strong anti-aging stability

The characteristic of aluminum alloy sheets that do not age or almost do not age when stored at room temperature is called anti-aging stability, because once aging occurs, the yield point will elongate and Lude bands will be produced during stretching, causing uneven deformation and wrinkling during stamping, which has a great impact on the appearance of stamped parts.

Usually, the stamping and forming of aluminum plates from aluminum processing plants to automobile component stamping plants often requires long-term transportation and storage. The materials are required to have strong aging resistance and not age within 6 months.

6. Strong dent resistance

The ability of plates and sheet metal parts to resist external forces and the intrusion of foreign objects without denting or permanent deformation is called dent resistance, represented by Pt, which is related to the flow stress and thickness of the material. Al5182 has good dent resistance.

7. Good Zr/Ti salt chemical conversion treatment performance

ABS must undergo surface passivation treatment before coating with lubricants to form a Zr/Ti salt system conversion film to create a good base for adsorbing lubricants. This treatment solution should be environmentally friendly, chromium-free, and mainly composed of metal salts containing titanium and zirconium, fluoride, nitrates and organic additives. It should form a conversion film on ABS through dipping and spraying.
