5182 Aluminum Body Panel

Deformed aluminum alloys are mainly used in automobiles to manufacture body panels such as doors and trunks, bumpers, engine covers, wheel spokes, hub covers, wheel exterior covers, protective covers for brake assemblies, mufflers, and anti-lock brakes.

At present, 5xxx aluminum alloys are widely used for the inner panels for automobiles such as 5052 and 5182 aluminum body panel. In terms of deep drawing performance and tensile strength, 5052 aluminum alloy is far inferior to 5182 alloy. Therefore, the preferred aluminum alloy material for complex deep-drawing inner panels of automobiles is 5182-O thin aluminum sheet.

Application advantages of aluminum alloys in automobiles

1. Lightweight vehicles, energy saving and consumption reduction, and environmentally friendly.

2. The recycling rate of automotive aluminum alloy parts is high.

3. Aluminum alloy cars reduce the weight of the car without reducing the capacity of the car. The center of gravity of the body is lowered, and the car is more stable and comfortable to drive. Due to the performance of the aluminum alloy material and the structure of the body, it can fully absorb the energy of the impact, so it is safer.

4. The use of aluminum alloys reduces the process and improves the assembly efficiency. The overall structure of the aluminum alloy car has fewer solder joints, which reduces the processing procedures. The overall aluminum alloy body is about 35% lighter than the welded steel body, and no anti-rust treatment is required. Only 25% to 35% of the parts need spot welding, which can greatly improve the assembly efficiency of the car.

5. It improves the fuel efficiency and increase load capacity.

The first aluminum alloys used in Europe and the United States on the car body are 2036 and 5182. The United States uses high-strength 2016 aluminum alloy on the outer body of the car body, and 5182 aluminum alloy with good formability on the inner plate parts. However, due to the poor formability and corrosion resistance of 2000 series alloys, Europe and the United States began to focus on the development of 6000 series alloys.

The first is the 6009 and 6010 bake-hardening alloys. After T4 treatment, they have good plasticity. After forming, they can be artificially aged and strengthened by spraying and baking to obtain higher strength (aging can increase their yield strength by nearly 100%). 6009 alloy can reach 241MPa, and the 6010 alloy plate can reach 310MPa.

At present, they have been widely used in the inner and outer panels of automobiles. Later, by improving the performance, 6111, 6016, 6022 and other aluminum alloys with good comprehensive performance for automobiles have been developed on their basis.

In China, the yield strength of 5182 h111 is between 115~125MPa, the tensile strength reaches 260~270MPa, the elongation after breaking (A80mm) can reach more than 27%, and the uniform elongation is more than 24%.

The yield strength of 6016-T4P automobile outer panel is between 100~110MPa, the tensile strength reaches 210~220MPa, the elongation after fracture (A80mm) can reach more than 27%, and the uniform elongation is more than 22.5%. After production verification, the product performance is stable, and the performance of 5182-O automotive inner panels meets the requirements of automotive panels.
